WHAT IS LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE?
Lymphatic Drainage Massage, also known as Manual Lymph Drainage, relieves swelling that happens when medical treatment or illness blocks your lymphatic system. Lymphatic drainage massage involves gently manipulation of specific areas of your body to help lymph move to an area with working lymph vessels.
Normally, your lymphatic system collects your lymph and returns it to your heart via a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes. When something disrupts your lymphatic system’s process, lymph collects in your arms and legs, making them swell.
A massage therapist uses lymphatic drainage massage techniques to move lymph from your tissues to your lymph nodes, which eases the swelling in your tissues.
Performing an effective Lymphatic Drainage Massage requires special knowledge, training and experience. The therapist must understand how the lymphatic system works, both anatomically and physiologically, in order to move the fluid effectively.
An intriguing aspect of this technique is its remarkable power, which, when executed correctly, brings about a gentle and soothing sensation. This gentle approach is essential because lymph vessels, unlike cylindrical blood vessels, have a flatter shape. Applying excessive pressure can flatten these vessels, hindering proper fluid movement for drainage. A key indicator of the technique's effectiveness is experiencing dry mouth or dry eyes as a common side effect. If you wear contact lenses, remember to remove them before the session. It is typical to feel the need to urinate shortly after. Always communicate any bodily changes to your therapist to enhance the session.
Risks and Benefits
Generally speaking, lymphatic drainage massage is a safe treatment to relieve lymphedema. There are some conditions and circumstances where lymphatic drainage massage isn’t recommended:
You have a heart condition.
You have kidney failure.
You have blood clots.
You have an infection.
Talk to your healthcare provider if you’re concerned your physical health might be affected by lymphatic drainage massage.
Other conditions that can benefit from lymphatic drainage massage:
Lymphatic drainage massages are often used to relieve lymphedema following breast cancer surgery.
Other conditions that benefit from lymphatic drainage massages are:
Rheumatoid arthritis: This is ongoing arthritis in your joints causing joint pain, swelling and stiffness.
Fibromyalgia: This condition causes chronic muscle and joint pain.
Chronic venous insufficiency: This happens when your leg veins aren’t working effectively, making it hard for your blood to return to your heart from your legs.
Lipedema: This happens when excess fat accumulates in your lower body, blocking your lymphatic pathway and causing lymphedema.
Lymphatic massage is traditionally used to enhance overall immune system function. For individuals constantly feeling fatigued, prone to illness, and lacking energy, this method can naturally boost the immune system. If you have lymphedema (or edema), it is essential to consult a physician and seek guidance from a highly skilled lymphatic drainage specialist. If you are dealing with any of the mentioned conditions or preparing for cosmetic surgery, feel free to reach out to us to explore scheduling sessions with our certified lymphatic therapists.
If you are experiencing any of the mentioned conditions or are considering cosmetic surgery, feel free to reach out to us to arrange sessions with one of our certified Manual Lymph Drainage therapists.
It is advisable to plan ahead whenever possible because only a few of our therapists specialize in this area, and we want to ensure that someone is available for you.
For those planning procedures like liposuction, it's best not to wait until you're already experiencing uncomfortable swelling before seeking treatment.
Additionally, consider budgeting for lymphatic drainage massages in advance, as you may require ten or more sessions. WABS offers discounted packages that are ideal for this type of bodywork.
Other ways to remove lymphatic fluid
Some people benefit from a mechanical process. In this process, you put a sleeve on the swollen arm or leg. The sleeve is attached to a pneumatic pump that pulsates and helps your lymph to drain from your tissues to your lymph nodes. LEARN MORE
TYPES OF LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE
PRE / POST OPERATIVE MLD
Accelerates your recovery, crafted to reduce swelling, improve healing, and decrease recovery time after surgery.
Many cosmetic, orthopedic and other medical procedures can result in excess lymph fluid accumulating in the body. Other than manually draining the fluid through a tube out of the body, lymphatic drainage massage is probably the most effective natural means of addressing common post-surgical lymphedema.
A few sessions of pre-surgery lymphatic drainage is also not a bad idea, as it can clear excess fluid and makes surgical procedures easier for the surgeon.
ROUTINE MLD
Gentle and therapeutic, designed to promote relaxation and improve circulation.
Ideal for maintaining overall wellness and supporting the body's natural detoxification process.
CONTOURING MLD
If your goal is to reduce swelling, bloating, cellulite appearance, stubborn fat and sculpt and contour your body this therapy uses BRAZILIAN LYMPH DRAINAGE Protocol.
Brazilian Lymph Drainage applies more pressure than your therapeutic Pre / Post Op. Manual Lymph Drainage or Routine Manual Lymph Drainage Massage.
You will expect vigorous maneuvers and high speed manual techniques to target volumen reduction rather than weight loss.
It can be applied to the abdomen, arms, back, legs, buttocks, and even neck or face (with a more delicate approach) to reduce size and rejuvenate your appearance.

Massage v/s Bodywork
Not sure if your body needs a Massage or Bodywork session?
Don't you know what the difference is between the two?
Massage and Bodywork are terms often used interchangeably, but they denote distinct practices within the realm of physical manipulation therapies. Understanding the differences can help individuals choose the right type of treatment for their needs.
Firstly, the term "massage" typically refers to the manipulation of the body's soft tissues, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments, using various techniques to enhance a person's health and well-being. It primarily focuses on relieving muscle tension, reducing stress, and improving circulation. Techniques include Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and sports massage, among others.
Bodywork, on the other hand, encompasses a broader range of therapeutic practices that not only include manipulation of soft tissues but also involve manipulative and energy-based techniques aimed at enhancing the body's structure and its energy systems. Bodywork practices include methods such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Cup Therapy, Rolfing (Structural Integration), Movement, Muscle Activation and Energy work. These techniques often address more than the physical body, aiming to balance the emotional and energy systems as well.
A second difference lies in the approach and goal of the treatments. Massage is generally aimed at promoting relaxation, easing muscle tension, and improving blood and lymphatic circulation. It's often seen as a treatment to alleviate the symptoms of stress, muscle tightness, or minor injuries. Bodywork, however, can have a more holistic approach, aiming not only to alleviate physical discomfort but also to improve overall body alignment, enhance the body's natural healing processes, and address the body-mind connection.
Thirdly, the techniques and tools used can vary significantly. Massage techniques are predominantly hands-on with the use of oils or lotions to facilitate smooth, therapeutic strokes. Bodywork may incorporate similar tools but also include the use of more varied techniques such as joint manipulation, movement re-education, and energy work, which don't necessarily require the application of oils or lotions.
Fourth, the training and certification for practitioners can differ greatly. Massage therapists typically undergo a structured program that focuses on anatomy, physiology, and specific massage techniques. They must pass a licensing exam in many jurisdictions. Bodywork practitioners may also be well-trained and certified, but the scope and nature of their training can be more diverse, reflecting the wide range of techniques and philosophies encompassed by bodywork. This can include specialized training in areas not typically covered in massage therapy programs.
Lastly, the experience of the recipient can be quite different. A massage session is often described as relaxing and rejuvenating, with immediate physical benefits such as reduced tension and improved circulation. A bodywork session can also be relaxing, but it may sometimes involve more intense or uncomfortable sensations as practitioners work to realign the body or release deeply held patterns of tension. The benefits of bodywork can be both immediate and longer-term, potentially leading to significant changes in posture, movement, and overall wellbeing.
In summary, while massage and bodywork share similarities in their use of touch to promote healing and wellbeing, they differ in scope, techniques, goals, practitioner training, and the recipient's experience. Understanding these differences can help individuals make informed decisions about which type of therapy will best meet their needs.
Massage sessions are a passive form of therapy where the therapist applies techniques on you. During a deep tissue or Swedish massage, you can even drift off without being consciously aware of the specific areas being worked on. While falling asleep during a massage can be beneficial for relaxation and stress relief, active participation is essential for significant changes. By actively engaging with your therapist throughout the session, known as Bodywork, you play a crucial role in your healing and wellness journey.
Bodywork is more than just receiving a massage; it involves actively participating in the process. By communicating your needs, preferences, and any discomfort to your therapist, you enhance the effectiveness of the session and contribute to your overall well-being. This interaction can result in a more personalized and beneficial experience, ensuring that each session is optimized. Remember, your body and mind are interconnected, and by engaging with your therapist, you are embracing a holistic approach to well-being.
